Man dies after crashing car through fence in Melbourne

A man has died while being restrained by the police after crashing a car through a fence in Melbourne's north.

Victoria Police received reports that a car had crashed through a fence and entered the front yard of a premises on Murphy Street in Preston at around 4 am Sunday.

Upon arrival, police observed a man in the vehicle acting erratically before he got out of the vehicle and confronted police, a spokesman said.

The officers tried to restrain the agitated man before he appeared to become unresponsive.

Attending officers immediately called for medical assistance and performed CPR on the man, but he couldn't be revived. The Homicide Squad will investigate the death and are still looking into the circumstances.

The Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation, in line with protocol when a person dies in police custody.
