Man jailed for life for Sir David Amess murder

A cold, calculated and dangerous man, inspired by Islamic State, will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing UK politician Sir David Amess.

A former media adviser to a prime minister of Somalia, Ali Harbi Ali, 26, stabbed Sir David repeatedly in an attack last October for what he said was revenge for the politician's support for air strikes on Syria.

Sir David was visiting members of his constituency when he was killed.

Ali, who was found guilty on Monday of murder and preparation of terrorism, was sentenced to a whole life term, meaning he will never be considered for release.

David's murder was an attack on democracy and we will never let terrorists prevail. prosecutors said he was a committed fanatical, radicalised Islamist terrorist Sir David's murder, which sent shockwaves through Westminster and led to calls for better security for MPs, just five years after Jo Cox was murdered.

Sir David's family said they did not feel any elation at the sentencing in a statement read out by Mr Jukes outside court.

Our amazing husband and father has been taken from us in an appalling and violent manner. They said nothing will ever compensate for that.

We will have to go through each day for the rest of our lives.

Ali told detectives he had spent years planning to kill a politician and had previously carried out reconnaissance at the Houses of Parliament, and of two other MPs, including cabinet minister Michael Gove.
