Ochoco Ranch in Central Oregon is a recreational hunter’s dream

Ochoco Ranch is an enormous private, pristine estate in Central Oregon. It is a recreational hunter's dream come true.

It was listed in March 2021 by Greg and Robin Yeakel of Cascade Sotheby s International Realty, who noted that it is the largest timbered property on the west side of the Ochoco Mountains and one of the larger parcels in Central Oregon.

Ms. Yeakel said that properties of this size don't come up this often.

The ranch, named for the mountains and the national forest, offers the utmost privacy: There are no county roads that run through the land, and there is no public access.

The seller, who bought the property in 2008, has made a lot of upgrades, the Yeakels said.

In addition to building the main house and lodge and other buildings, he added over 100 ponds, improved over 100 miles of private roads and done about 15 miles of stream restoration, Mr. Yeakel said.

Ms. Yeakel said that the seller's latest project is an initiative to restore the property's beaver population.

A three-bedroom house, several cabins, a six-stall horse barn and tack room with a workshop and living quarters are also located in addition to a lodge.

The 40,040 acre ranch property, which has only four owners, has streams and ponds filled with Redband trout, meadows that are home to trophy elk, black bear, wild turkeys, deer and wild horses and covered bridges and roads. It is situated close to 850,000 acres of national forest, 36,500 of which are designated wilderness. In the autumn, the timbered land offers private hunting for turkey, grouse and upland birds. The property, which has 165 million board feet of timber, has a significant carbon credit and has a fire-watch tower.

Prineville, whose population is about 9,200, is a quintessential Western agricultural and equestrian town that is home to generations of large-land ranchers. The Crooked River runs through it, and its main drag, Third Street, has a provincial courthouse, a bunch of old-time bars and some restaurants.

Ms. Yeakel said that the best burgers in the universe are at Tastee Treet, a dining drive-in.

It has hard ice cream milkshakes, which are not easy to find, said Mr. Yeakel. Ochoco Ranch is about a 1.5 hour drive from Bend, Oregon.
