Polish Prime Minister says country will not be intimidated after court ruling

Earlier this week, Polish Prime Minister Ursula von der Leyen clashed with the European Commission President Mateusz Morawiecki in the European Parliament after Poland s high court ruled that parts of EU law are in direct conflict with its own constitution. Ms Von der Leyen said: We have been concerned about the independence of the Polish judiciary for some time. The Polish Prime Minister responded to this by saying his country will not be intimidated adding that the highest law in Poland is its constitution.

Although they have the final say in some policy areas, EU member states are required to follow a common rule book. The European Commission can now either legally challenge the decision of the Polish High Court or impose financial penalties.
