R Kelly sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexual exploitation

It's Thursday, June 30. Good morning. One thing to know right now is that R Kelly has been sentenced to a minimum of one year in prison.

The former US R&B singer was sentenced in Brooklyn federal court to 30 years in prison.

Robert Kelly, 55-year-old, was convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking in September of last year.

Prosecutors described Kelly's actions as systematic sexual abuse, in some cases involving teenage girls.

Several women who testified against Kelly said he had promised to mentor them and help them reach stardom, but they also said he had to subject them to degrading sexual treatment and physical harm.

Many women said the abuse resulted in ongoing mental health problems.

One thing you will be hearing about today is that NSW teachers are on strike.

Thousands of teachers in NSW are on strike today, protesting pay and staff shortages.

A mass rally is taking place at the state parliament in Sydney, and public and catholic school teachers are taking part in a 24 hour strike.

It's the first time teachers from government and Catholic schools have taken strike action together.

The NSW Teachers Federation described the government's 3 per cent pay offer as an insult that falls below inflation.

The union is warning the government won't be able to fix the teacher shortage unless it provides more attractive salaries.

This is the third day of industrial action by teachers in seven months.

Let's get you up to speed.

One more thing: stay at the NATO summit in Madrid.

NATO leaders are at a summit this week in Spain's capital, in case you missed it.

None of the NATO leaders rated Russia as the most direct threat to alliance security.

We'll be back later in the day with more.
