Russia cuts off natural gas supplies to Finland

Russia has cut off Finnish natural gas after the Scandinavian country made clear it wants to join NATO and refuses to pay in Russian currency.

Natural gas supplies to Finland have been cut off under Gasum's supply contract, Finnish state company Gasum announced on Saturday.

The change in supply would not affect operation, and customers would still have access to natural gas through other sources, according to the enterprise.

The statement said that Gasum will supply natural gas to customers from other sources through the Balticconnector pipeline during the upcoming summer season. Gasum gas filling stations in the gas network area will continue in normal operation. Natural gas accounts for only 6% of Finland's energy consumption.

Russia has strong armed Finland on other energy supply chains.

A state power company said last week it would cut off electricity to start next week, because it claims the country hasn't paid.

RAO Nordic, a subsidiary of Inter ROA, said it will stop exporting electricity to Finland without any specifics due to larger tensions across Europe that have been affected by the Russia War.

This situation is exceptional and happened for the first time in over twenty years of our trading history, RAO Nordic said in a statement.
