Trump’s ex-secret secretary of state Rex Tillerson testify in Tom Barrack trial

Rex Tillerson, who served as President Donald Trump's first secretary of state, gave testimony on Monday in a trial involving the former president's friend, Tom Barrack.

What Happened: Tillerson became the first member of Trump's administration to testify in the trial involving the close friend of the former U.S. leader, according to Politico.

The former secretary of state said he was unaware that Barrack was not privy to sensitive internal discussions, and he never requested that the California billionaire act be a conduit between the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

Tillerson said that you don't want outside parties to have that information and try to use it to their advantage.

Why Does It Matter: Tillerson said he was unaware that Barrack had allegedly communicated nonpublic information to someone outside the government.

According to a prior report, Barrack is accused of being an unregistered foreign agent. Prosecutors allege that he met with and took directions from the UAE for two years beginning in 2016.

The U.S. law requires anyone operating under the control of foreign governments or foreign officials, other than diplomats, to register with the U.S. attorney general.

The lawyers for Barrack argued that he was not under the control of anyone, according to Politico.

The attorneys said that officials in the U.S. government and possibly Trump were aware that Barrack was backchanneling with the UAE.

Trump is facing legal investigations regarding government papers seized from his Florida estate and may delay his 2024 presidential run announcement.

The former U.S. president, citing a poll, said he was ahead of President Joe Biden in three states.
