U.S. oil groups urge Biden to take fuel export ban off table

U.S. oil groups urge Biden to take fuel export ban off table letter A Texas resident fills a car belonging to a Texas resident with gasoline at a gas station after increased fuel prices in the U.S. in Ciudad Juarez.

The largest U.S. oil trade groups said on Tuesday that the Biden administration is considering limiting fuel exports to lower consumer prices and urging top officials to take the option off the table, according to a letter seen by the Reuters.

The joint letter by the American Petroleum Institute and the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufactures to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm is a latest clash between the Biden administration and the American Petroleum Institute.

Granholm sent a letter to refiners in August urging them to focus more on building domestic inventories of gasoline and diesel and less on exports. She warned if the administration would need to consider emergency measures. Granholm and top White House officials repeated that warning in a hastily-called virtual meeting on Friday. The restrictions are not being considered at this time, according to White House officials. The groups said that discussions with officials raise concerns that the Administration might be pursuing a ban on refined petroleum products as a means to build domestic inventories of gasoline and diesel.
