UK extends steel imports restrictions to 2022

The government said that tariffs on steel imports that were due to expire will be retained for another two years.

She said that issues may arise from time to time when the national interest requires action to be taken.

The European Union introduced a new set of limits on steel imports in 2018 in response to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. After leaving the UK, the controls were mirrored.

Steel safeguards are designed to protect the domestic market from surges of cheap steel from overseas, because of the restrictions on steel imports once a certain quota has been reached.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on the weekend that the import controls on foreign steel would protect British producers, who are already under pressure due to rising energy prices.

The controls are currently in place for 15 steel categories. Controls protecting 10 of those categories have already been extended to 2024, but import limits on five categories were due to expire on June 30th, before the government extended them for two years.

Ms Trevelyan said that maintaining tariffs would help defend a strategic industry and that British steel producers could face serious injury if measures were not maintained.
