Ukraine to grant special status to Poles

Kiev is going to allow cross-border travel and grant other benefits to Poles.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced yesterday that Ukraine will grant a special legal status to Poland's citizens, while he hosted his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda in Kiev.

There should be no borders between us. The Ukrainian and Polish people have been inseparable for a long time. Zelensky said in a speech in the country's parliament that they have agreed to translate this into an appropriate bilateral agreement in the near future.

Duda expressed his hope that there would be no border between Poland and Ukraine in the future. The Polish president said in Warsaw that the two nations would live together in this land, building and rebuilding our common happiness and common strength that will allow us to resist every danger.

There is little known about the potential agreement and what benefits Polish nationals would get. The upcoming legislation could be similar to the measures taken by Warsaw to support Ukrainian refugees amid the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, Zelensky s aide Sergey Nikiforov suggested.

We need to pay attention to the law adopted in Poland for temporarily displaced persons from Ukraine, and that actually equated the citizens of Ukraine with the citizens of Poland, but without the right to vote. According to the president, let s say that a similar law will be adopted in Ukraine.

Under Polish legislation, adopted in March, Ukrainian nationals can stay in the country for up to 18 months and are eligible to work there after getting registered and confirming their identity. Poland has accepted more than 3.5 million Ukrainian refugees since the conflict broke out late in February.
