US delays deal to remove tariffs on UK steel and aluminum: report

Dec 1, Reuters reported on Wednesday that the US is delaying a deal to remove Trump-era tariffs on UK steel and aluminum due to Washington's concerns over post-Brexit trade rules affecting Northern Ireland.

A U.S. Commerce Department official said in a communication seen by the newspaper that talks with the UK on easing metals tariffs could not move ahead.

The report said that the U.S. concerns about British threats to trigger Article 16 were cited. com 3 olxsUh.

Article 16 allows the UK or EU to suspend parts of the agreement that introduced some checks on the movement of goods from mainland Britain to Northern Ireland if they lead to persistent difficulties.

The administration of former President Donald Trump has imposed 25% and 10% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, citing national security concerns, which has resulted in retaliatory measures from the European Union on goods such as motorcycles, whiskey and tobacco.

Britain incorporated those into its new independent tariff system when it exited from the EU at the end of 2020, but is now reviewing the list of products to protect UK-specific interests.
