US envoy Kerry calls for more spending on methane

John Kerry, US special presidential climate change envoy, said on Tuesday that countries need to ramp up spending to reduce methane emissions in order to meet the global climate goals. Kerry said on Tuesday that countries need to keep up momentum since last year, when more than 100 countries have joined the Global Methane Pledge and the US and the EU pledge to reduce global methane emissions by 2030.

Kerry said that trillions of dollars would be needed to help countries implement their national plans to slash methane.

Kerry said that finance has an immense challenge and that less than 2 percent of global climate finance is devoted to methane, even though methane is responsible for nearly half of net global warming.
