Social Media Influencer Claims IndiGo Airlines' Pre-Packaged Meals Have Excessive Sodium Content

In a recent video, social media influencer Revant Himatsingka, also known as Food Pharmer, raised concerns about the sodium content in pre-packaged meals served by IndiGo airlines onboard flights. Himatsingka compared the sodium levels in IndiGo's Magic Upma, Poha, and Daal Chawal to those found in Maggi instant noodles, highlighting significant differences and suggesting that the airline's meals may not be as healthy as perceived. He emphasized the importance of being cautious about seemingly healthy food options that could actually be high in sodium, posing risks to health such as hypertension, heart issues, and kidney problems from excessive sodium consumption.

In response to Himatsingka's allegations, IndiGo airlines defended their food service practices, stating that they source fresh and pre-packaged meals from reputable vendors and provide detailed ingredient and nutritional information complying with FSSAI norms. The airline clarified that their pre-packaged offerings follow traditional Indian recipes, with salt content within recommended limits. IndiGo highlighted that passengers can choose from freshly prepared pre-booked meals or purchase pre-packaged food items onboard, with printed information serving as guidance for nutritional intake decisions, aiming to offer a hassle-free flying experience.

Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cautioned against excessive sodium intake, linking it to increased blood pressure and heightened risks of heart disease and stroke. The text also mentioned a previous controversy involving Maggi instant noodles in 2015, when it faced regulatory scrutiny over lead content exceeding permissible limits and mislabeling concerns. Himatsingka's critique extended beyond IndiGo's meals, as he had previously sparked a debate regarding the sugar content in Cadbury's Bournvita, urging for more transparency in food labeling and garnering positive outcomes like sugar reduction following his social media activism.
