Canada Issues Travel Advisory for India During Lok Sabha Elections 2024

## Canada Issues Travel Advisory for India During Lok Sabha Elections 2024

The Canadian government has advised its citizens to exercise caution when travelling to India between May and June 2024, citing the potential for terrorist attacks and anti-Canada sentiment during the Lok Sabha elections.

The advisory specifically mentions the possibility of protests and intimidation directed towards Canadians, particularly in Delhi and the National Capital Region. It recommends maintaining a low profile, avoiding crowded areas, and travelling with companions.

Certain cities, including Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai, are flagged for non-essential travel due to the temporary unavailability of consular services. Canadians requiring assistance are advised to contact the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi or the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa.

Travel to Assam and Manipur is also discouraged due to the risk of terrorism and insurgency. The advisory further warns against visiting the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir due to the unpredictable security situation.

Canadians are urged to remain vigilant about demonstrations during the general elections, scheduled between April 19 and June 1. Avoiding areas with protests and large gatherings, following local authorities' instructions, and monitoring local media for updates are recommended.

This advisory follows a recent reduction in Canadian diplomatic personnel in India due to tensions stemming from allegations of India's involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist. In September 2023, India temporarily suspended visa services to Canadian citizens amidst the diplomatic standoff.
