A Farewell to the Queen of the Skies and the End of an Era

## Air India Bids Farewell to its Boeing 747s

On April 22nd, 2023, Air India's remaining four Boeing 747s, once the pride of its fleet, departed from Mumbai International Airport for the last time. These iconic aircraft, once considered the "Queen of the Skies," had served as the mainstay of Air India's long-haul international operations for decades.

The Economic Times reported that the four Boeing 747-400s have found a new owner in AerSale, a US-based company specializing in aftermarket commercial jet engines and parts. Two of the aircraft are expected to be converted into freighters, while the remaining two will be disassembled for their parts.

This marks the end of an era for Air India and the Boeing 747. The aircraft first entered service with Air India in 1971, offering four weekly flights from India to London. It boasted a spacious triple-class configuration with 423 seats.

Beyond commercial operations, the Boeing 747s also served as VIP transports for Indian dignitaries, including prime ministers, presidents, and vice presidents. This role continued until 2020 when the Indian Air Force acquired two Boeing 777s for this purpose.

Air India even rebranded the 747s under the "Your Place in the Sky" campaign, introducing a new livery with silver and white exteriors accented by red details. The windows were painted in the style of Rajasthani arches, reminiscent of the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, creating a unique and eye-catching design.

The departure of the Boeing 747s marks a significant moment in aviation history. These iconic aircraft have played a crucial role in connecting people and cultures across the globe. While their era with Air India has come to an end, their legacy will continue to inspire and captivate aviation enthusiasts for years to come.
