Hundreds Affected as Landslide Damages Roads and Homes in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir

A village in Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir, is facing a severe crisis as over 30 houses are at risk of damage, and more than 60,000 people in the Gool sub-division have been disconnected due to a significant land subsidence on the Ramban-Gool road, impacting the vital connectivity of the area. Additionally, a 6 km Pernote-Thalwa road has been damaged by a massive landslide, further exacerbating the situation in the region as reported by the Additional District Development Commissioner, Ramban.

The land subsidence and landslides have created havoc not only on the roads but also on critical infrastructure like the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramula Rail Link and the 1850 MW Sawlakote Hydel Project, affecting the transportation and power supply systems in the area, leading to a severe disconnect for the residents of the Gool sub-division. Responding to the crisis, efforts are underway as deployment teams conduct surveys to assess the damages, evacuate affected residents, and restore the road connectivity, which is crucial for the region.

The impact of the natural calamity caused by the landslides includes the damage to several orchards, pine trees, pucca paths, and water supply schemes, significantly disrupting the lives of the villagers in the area. The affected families are being relocated to temporary shelters in Panchayat Ghars, tents, and other buildings, while rescue operations by Quick Response Teams, SDRF, and Police are ongoing to ensure the safety of the affected individuals. The landslides are attributed to the seeping of stagnant water from recent rains in the region, further complicating the situation along with the unforeseen damages to public property and households.
