Google's Engineering Team in California Faces Layoffs
Google's engineering team in California has reportedly experienced significant layoffs, with nearly 50 positions being eliminated. The company plans to replace these roles with staff in India and Mexico, according to internal documents obtained by CNBC.
These layoffs primarily affect Google's core team, responsible for developing the technical infrastructure for the company's flagship products, ensuring user safety online, and managing its global information technology framework. This includes crucial technical divisions like information technology, Python development, technical infrastructure, security protocols, application platforms, core development, and various engineering functions.
Asim Husain, vice president of Google Developer Ecosystem, announced the layoffs in an email last week, describing them as the most significant reduction in his team's workforce. He explained that the company aims to maintain its global footprint while expanding in high-growth global workforce locations to operate closer to partners and developer communities.
Google emphasizes streamlining structures to provide employees with more opportunities to focus on innovative projects and core priorities while reducing bureaucracy. However, the exact number of job cuts remains undisclosed.
These layoffs are part of a broader trend of significant job cuts affecting some of the world's largest companies in April 2024. Technology giants like Tesla, Intel, Amazon, and Apple have all been compelled to reduce their workforce. To date, over 75,000 individuals have lost their jobs in the technology sector this year, according to a Times of India estimate.
