India's Power Generation Capacity Sees Growth in Renewables and Nuclear

India's power generation capacity witnessed significant growth in the fiscal year 2024, with renewable energy sources and nuclear power leading the charge.

The country's total power generation capacity increased by 6.22% to 441.97 GW, compared to 416.06 GW in the previous year. This growth was driven by a substantial increase in non-fossil fuel-based capacity, which includes renewable energy sources.

The capacity of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydropower, increased by an impressive 10.79% to 190.57 GW. This significant rise highlights India's commitment to clean energy and its efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Within the renewable energy segment, solar and wind power continued to dominate, while hydropower also saw a slight increase. The government's focus on promoting renewable energy through various initiatives and policies has played a crucial role in this growth.

Nuclear power capacity also witnessed a healthy increase of 20.64%, reaching 8.18 GW. This growth indicates India's continued reliance on nuclear power as a clean and reliable source of energy.

While fossil fuel-based power generation capacity still holds the largest share, its growth has slowed down compared to previous years. Coal-based capacity increased by 3% to 210.97 GW, while gas capacity saw a marginal rise to 25.04 GW. This trend suggests a gradual shift towards cleaner energy sources.
