Kerala Saves 200 MW of Electricity with Consumer Cooperation

The Kerala government's efforts to control power consumption during peak hours have yielded positive results. On May 3rd, the state saved around 200 megawatts of electricity, a significant achievement attributed to the cooperation of consumers, especially large industries.

Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty acknowledged the role of consumers in this success. He emphasized the importance of self-imposed restrictions and urged everyone, including the media, to participate in a campaign to promote responsible power consumption.

The minister assured that the proposed restrictions by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) would not affect domestic consumers. He clarified that occasional power cuts due to transformer overload were not intentional and were quickly resolved.

Krishnankutty highlighted the critical situation faced by the state due to rising temperatures and increased power demand. He warned that exceeding the peak demand of 6,000 MW could lead to power supply disruptions.

The minister's earlier appeal for responsible electricity use had prompted KSEB to propose restrictions during peak hours, including switching off lights in commercial establishments, adjusting air conditioner temperatures, and implementing power consumption curbs by large industries.

These measures, coupled with consumer cooperation, have successfully reduced peak hour power consumption, demonstrating the positive impact of collective action in addressing energy challenges.
