Expanding Treatment, Prevention, and Enforcement Efforts

Tripura Government's Multi-Pronged Approach to Combat Drug Abuse

The Tripura government is taking significant steps to combat the growing problem of drug abuse among its youth. Recognizing the need for accessible treatment facilities, the government is establishing multi-layer treatment centers across the state.

Breaking away from the limitations of urban areas, the government is prioritizing the expansion of drug de-addiction facilities in various districts. This ensures that treatment becomes readily available to all individuals struggling with addiction.

A state-of-the-art central-level rehabilitation center is being constructed in Sepahijala district at a cost of Rs 121 crore. This facility will provide comprehensive treatment and support services to individuals seeking recovery.

In collaboration with AIIMS Delhi, a drug treatment clinic is already operational at the Modern Psychiatric Hospital in Narsingarh. This clinic has successfully treated hundreds of patients, offering specialized care for those struggling with substance abuse issues like heroin, brown sugar, and injectable drugs.

The government has ambitious plans to establish drug de-addiction centers in all districts. Under the Subarna Jayanti Tripura Nirman scheme, Rs 20 crore has been sanctioned for each facility. These 50-bedded centers will offer both indoor and outdoor services to patients.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has also sponsored five addiction treatment facilities in various parts of the state. These facilities are ready to begin operations and will further strengthen the state's capacity to address drug abuse.

The biggest government-managed drug rehabilitation center is also set to be established in Tripura. The Ministry of Development of the North East Region (DoNER) has sanctioned Rs 121 crore for this facility, which will be located in the Bishramganj area of Sepahijala district. This 200-bed center will provide free treatment and support services to patients, aiding their recovery journey.

The Tripura government is also taking stringent measures to combat the illegal drug trade. These efforts aim to reduce the availability of drugs and prevent new cases of addiction. Additionally, the government is focusing on reducing HIV and AIDS cases among the youth, as intravenous drug abuse is a significant risk factor for contracting these diseases.

Chief Minister Manik Saha has reiterated the government's commitment to creating an addiction-free Tripura. This call comes in response to the increasing prevalence of addiction to 'Ganja' and narcotics across the state. The government's multi-pronged approach, encompassing treatment, prevention, and enforcement, demonstrates its dedication to tackling this critical issue and safeguarding the well-being of its citizens.
