Conservative Lawmakers in Japan React to Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

Conservative members of Japan's ruling LDP have expressed discontentment over the Sapporo High Court's declaration that the absence of legal provisions for same-sex marriage in the country is unconstitutional. One former Cabinet member went as far as to label the court decision itself as unconstitutional, citing concerns about the perceived impact of same-sex marriage on Japan's traditional family values.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has not shown support for legalizing same-sex marriage, stating that the government does not view the lack of provisions as unconstitutional. The LDP, known for its conservative stance, has historically hindered efforts to discuss or legalize same-sex marriage in the Diet, attributing such opposition to upholding traditional family values.

The high court's ruling prompted discussions about the urgent need for sincere debates and response measures on the matter, indicating an increasing societal push for recognizing same-sex marriage. However, resistance from conservative politicians within the LDP persists, with concerns about losing support if they align with LGBT causes and support same-sex marriage legislation. Despite growing public support for same-sex marriage in Japan and the example set by other countries, including the enactment of laws supporting sexual minorities, the LDP remains cautious about making significant legislative changes in this area.
