Japan Leads Global Effort to Regulate Generative AI

Japan Unveils International Framework for Generative AI Regulation

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida presented an international framework for the regulation and use of generative AI during a speech at the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Kishida acknowledged the immense potential of generative AI as a tool for global advancement, but also emphasized the need to address its potential downsides, particularly the risk of disinformation.

Building upon Japan's leadership of the Group of Seven (G7) in 2023, the Hiroshima AI Process was launched to establish international guiding principles and a code of conduct for AI developers. This initiative has garnered support from 49 countries and regions, forming the Hiroshima AI Process Friends Group.

The Friends Group will collaborate on implementing the principles and code of conduct to mitigate the risks associated with generative AI. Their efforts will also focus on promoting international cooperation to ensure the safe, secure, and trustworthy use of AI for the benefit of all.

Kishida's announcement adds to the growing global effort to establish regulations and oversight for AI. Various nations, including the European Union, the United States, and China, are actively developing their own frameworks, while international bodies like the United Nations are also exploring ways to supervise this rapidly evolving technology.
