U.S. Stocks Rise on Monday, Led by Energy and Technology Sectors
U.S. stocks closed higher on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining more than 100 points. The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ also rose, led by gains in the energy and technology sectors.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.35% to 38,811.58, while the S&P 500 gained 0.82% to 5,169.93. The NASDAQ Composite Index climbed 0.95% to 16,309.74.
Energy shares led the gains on Monday, rising 1.5%. Technology stocks also performed well, with the NASDAQ Composite Index rising nearly 1%.
Among individual stocks, Spirit Airlines fell sharply after reporting first-quarter results that missed analysts' expectations. Perficient, Inc. shares surged after the company disclosed an acquisition deal and first-quarter results. Strong Global Entertainment, Inc. shares also jumped after FG Acquisition Corp. announced the proposed acquisition of Strong/MDI Screen Systems and the launch of Saltire Holdings.
In commodity markets, oil prices rose 0.6% to $78.56 per barrel, while gold prices gained 1.1% to $2,333.60 per ounce.
European stocks were also higher on Monday, with the eurozone's STOXX 600 index rising 0.53%. Asian markets closed mixed, with Japan's Nikkei 225 index falling 0.1% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rising 0.55%.
No major economic reports are scheduled for release on Tuesday.
