Healthcare Industry Supports Wider Consultations for Standard Healthcare Service Rates

The healthcare industry has welcomed the Centre's initiative to engage in comprehensive discussions with all states and union territories to determine standardized rates for healthcare services. After the Supreme Court's directive earlier this year to set standard rates for private hospitals, the Centre acknowledged the importance of engaging with stakeholders, including private players, to create a sustainable system that considers regional variations and the unique challenges faced by healthcare providers.

Probal Ghoshal, the chairman and director of the Ujala Cygnus group of hospitals, emphasized the significance of transparency in costs and affordability in healthcare while recognizing the complexities of operating in different city tiers. Ghoshal highlighted the importance of addressing factors like patient volumes, talent acquisition issues, and maintaining quality standards at competitive costs to establish a model that benefits both healthcare providers and patients. Additionally, industry bodies, such as Nathealth-Hospital Federation of India, raised concerns before the Supreme Court, stressing that a uniform price fixation for medical services across all hospitals in India is not feasible due to diverse operational structures and subsidies received by government hospitals.

The Centre's acknowledgment of states' apprehensions regarding the potential financial challenges and competitiveness that could arise from the fixation of healthcare rates indicates a need for a nuanced approach that considers market dynamics and economic factors. Abhay Soi, the president of Nathealth, addressed the implications of standardizing treatment rates on various aspects of healthcare services, including quality, patient safety, sustainability, treatment outcomes, and infrastructure investment. The body appreciates the government's concerns and recognizes the multifaceted nature of standardizing healthcare rates, emphasizing the need to maintain a delicate balance to ensure the continued improvement of healthcare services.
