AI Tools in Job Applications - Gen Z's Reliance and Impact

AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Bard have found increasing use among Gen Z individuals for activities such as writing assignments and creating cover letters for job applications. Shoshana Davis, a career expert specializing in Gen Z and the founder of Fairy Job Mother, highlighted concerns about the excessive dependence on AI tools among this generation, particularly noting issues with the way tools like ChatGPT are being utilized in the job application process. Employers are facing a situation where they receive numerous identical cover letters, leading them to suspect that applicants are relying heavily on AI tools for crafting their job application materials.

According to studies conducted by Canva and Grammarly, a significant portion of job seekers, especially from Gen Z, are utilizing AI for resume creation and job-related tasks. While technology and AI are encouraged for certain aspects of the job search process, Davis stresses the importance of not blindly copying answers from AI tools like ChatGPT, as it can potentially harm one's chances of securing a job. A survey by Resume Genius revealed that many hiring managers hold reservations about AI-generated resumes, with over half of them viewing such resumes negatively and some considering it a potential red flag during the hiring process.

In navigating the job search process, experts suggest that AI can be effectively used for tasks such as interview preparation and company research. However, it is emphasized that AI tools should be seen as supplementary aids rather than replacements for human input. Michelle Reisdorf, a district director at Robert Half recruitment firm, advises job seekers to use AI for tasks like proofreading and enhancing existing content, rather than relying solely on AI to create resumes. Recruiters are likely to appreciate a personal touch and specific details in applications, indicating the importance of maintaining a human element in job materials.
