Funding Secured for Long-Awaited Eucla Airstrip Upgrade

The long-awaited upgrade of the Eucla airstrip on the Nullarbor Plain is set to become a reality, thanks to the Western Australian government's commitment of $3.3 million in funding. This funding is part of a larger $29.3 million plan aimed at improving regional and remote airstrips across the state, with particular focus on sealing the flood-prone runway in Eucla.

The funding announcement comes after years of lobbying efforts by the Shire of Dundas, with the council president, Laurene Bonza, expressing hopes of completing the upgrade within 12 months. The Eucla airstrip's upgrade, which includes sealing the 1,200-meter runway, is expected to not only benefit the local population but also provide a crucial lifeline for the thousands of motorists traveling on the Nullarbor each year.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has previously faced challenges when the Eucla airstrip was out of action, having to resort to landing on the Eyre Highway for emergency evacuations. With the runway sealing project on the horizon, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to enhance accessibility and safety for both locals and travelers passing through Eucla. Additionally, the proposed Western Green Energy Hub, one of the world's largest renewable energy projects, is poised to benefit from the improved airstrip infrastructure in Eucla.
