Bulgarian Army Faces Challenges in Filling Reserve Ranks

The Bulgarian army is facing difficulties in filling its reserve, according to caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov. In an attempt to address this issue, the military authorities are exploring the option of attracting reservists through temporary service in the voluntary reserve.

One of the strategies being considered is to offer higher pay and modernize weapons to make the reserve more appealing to young people. A recent opinion poll revealed that the outdated Soviet-era weaponry is a significant deterrent for potential recruits.

Should these measures prove ineffective, the minister indicated that alternative solutions will be explored. However, he emphasized that the focus is not on reintroducing compulsory conscription, but rather on preparing citizens to defend their homeland. This could involve introducing mandatory military training for certain categories of civil servants, such as those seeking employment in the Ministry of Interior or the Ministry of Justice.
