Mamata Banerjee Vows to Resist CAA, NRC, and UCC in West Bengal
On April 11th, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared her firm opposition to the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within the state.
Addressing a gathering in Kolkata on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, Banerjee cautioned against attempts to incite communal violence during elections. She urged the attendees to remain united and not fall prey to such tactics.
"We will not accept the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, National Register of Citizens and Uniform Civil Code," Banerjee asserted. "If we remain united, no one will be able to harm us."
Banerjee emphasized that her party's primary focus is to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She encouraged the attendees to ensure that their votes do not go to any other party in the upcoming elections.
The Chief Minister also criticized the BJP-led central government for its use of central investigative agencies against opposition parties. She was accompanied at the Eid gathering by her nephew and TMC national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee.
Banerjee reiterated her opposition to the CAA, citing its connection to the NRC and the potential for detention camps similar to those established in Assam.
"The CAA is related to NRC, that is why we are opposing it," she stated. "We don't want detention camps like those in Assam.
