Hong Kong Chief Executive pledges to raise national security awareness on National Security Day

The National Security Education Day events were being conducted through online platforms because of the ongoing pandemic, Lam said at a news conference on Friday.

The events, themed Uphold National Security, Safeguard Our Home aims to raise Hong Kong residents awareness of national security, create a positive atmosphere of national security and increase the capacity to fend off national security risks, the government website said.

Lam said she will carry out her duties of promoting national security for the rest of her government's term, which ends on June 30, and she hopes that the next Hong Kong administration will continue the work on national security education.

I promise to raise Hong Kong residents awareness of national security and abiding by the law. She said that civil servants should shoulder the primary responsibilities of safeguarding national security and the Basic Law.

During Lam's term, Hong Kong reformed its electoral system by increasing the role of the city's Election Committee as part of the overall system design, ensuring political security and implementing the policy of patriots administering Hong Kong The Legislative Council passed a bill on the duty to pledge allegiance to the city and uphold the Basic Law in accordance with the National Security Law for Hong Kong.

Friday was the second anniversary of the National Security Education Day in the city since the National Security Law for Hong Kong was promulgated in 2020. The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, was established April 15 as National Security Education Day on July 1, 2015.

A picture book on national outer space security in several languages, including Chinese and English, will be distributed to children, and the electronic form of the book is also available online, according to the government website.
