Asian markets trade flat after Wall Street rout

SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Monday it was a quiet day on Asian stock markets with China and Hong Kong closed for Labor Day.

The major bourses fell after the rout on Friday night on Wall Street, but losses were modest.

The Nikkei 225 in Japan fell 29.37 points or 0.11 percent to 26,818. 53.

The Australian All Ordinaries fell 101.20 points or 1.31 percent to 7,623. 60.

In New Zealand, the S&P NZX 50 dropped 99.94 points or 0.84 percent to 11,784. 36.

Treasury yields went up, helping to sustain the strength of the U.S. dollar. The euro was steady at 1.0547 around the Sydney close Monday. The British pound was trading at 1.2572. The Japanese yen weakened sharply to 130.17. The Swiss franc has softened to 0.9723.

The Canadian dollar dropped to 1.2866. The Australian dollar was down to 0.7052. The New Zealand dollar fell to 0.6433.
