Netflix cuts 2% of its US workforce due to job losses

20.05.2022

The entertainment giant announced on Tuesday that the redundancies will affect its US office in California. They account for about 2% of its North American workforce.

The changes are primarily driven by business needs rather than individual performance, which makes them particularly tough, as none of us want to say goodbye to such great colleagues, the company said in a statement.

The Los Angeles Times reported that recruiting, communications and the content department were all affected, even though it wasn't known which parts of the business would see job losses.

Unfortunately, i was affected today by netflix layoffs. It was a wild ride and I'm really proud of the work that i did, particularly being part of the netflixgolden launch, and feel fortunate to work with such brilliant people — Madelyn Chung May 17, 2022, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites. Along with job losses, the company is also cutting content and pulling back its own creations. In order to cut costs, it cancelled the development of Pearl, an animated series created by Meghan Markle.

Netflix is not alone in making job cuts. In recent weeks, a slew of US tech companies from start-ups to big names such as Uber and Twitter have said they are slowing or freezing hiring or, like online car sales firm Carvana, have announced redundancies, citing a downturn.
