Biden says monkeypox outbreak is something everyone should concern

22.05.2022

President Joe Biden said Sunday that the monkeypox outbreak was something everyone should be concerned about, and the U.S. is looking into what vaccines might be available to protect people from the disease.

Biden told reporters on his trip to Asia that they hadn't told me about the level of exposure yet, but it's something everyone should be concerned about, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. We're working on it hard to figure out what we do, and what vaccine, if any, might be available for it. It is a concern that if it were to spread, it would be consequential. In a statement, the World Health Organization said that recent outbreaks have been reported in 12 countries that are not endemic for monkeypox virus, or in countries where the virus isn't found. The virus is usually found in West and Central Africa. There were 92 confirmed cases of monkeypox confirmed in a laboratory, and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox with investigations ongoing, according to the WHO. The WHO said no deaths have been reported from monkeypox. There are mainly but not exclusively cases identified among men who have sex with men, according to the WHO. Those with the virus have sought care in primary care and sexual health clinics. Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, said Sunday there was a vaccine that is relevant to treating the virus. Sullivan said in a press briefing aboard Air Force One that the vaccine is available for deployment.
