The Front Line of the U.S. Clariant AG, a Swiss chemicals producer, just opened a facility in Romania to make so-called advanced biofuels, using non-edible waste or agricultural crops to make fuels which can be blended into gasoline and diesel. That's better than the so-called first-generation ethanol currently available on the market which is made of foodstuffs like sugar or corn.
The carbon savings from the new approach will make existing ethanol that s more profitable than new processes, Clariant Chief Executive Officer Conrad Keijzer said in a conference call.
Asked for first generation (double the price), we expect first generation to pay double the price. That s simply because it is legally legislated, he said.
Clariant built the plant primarily to license its technology, which it wants to promote to other companies.
The European Union has set a target that in 2022 at least 0.2% of all transport fuels should be made from advanced biofuels. This proportion will increase to 2.2% in 2030.
Clariant s technology could also be used in aviation and chemicals. This is a prime example of a circular economy, Keijzer told the RFP.
