Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai top spot in India's passenger vehicle segment

The country's largest homegrown car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India MSI managed to retain the top spot in India's passenger vehicle segment, according to the latest data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations FADA Maruti, up 7 per cent compared to 1,33, 732 units in July 2021, according to the latest data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. The company, despite the increase in total sales, stated that the shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles, mainly domestic models, and the company had taken all possible measures to minimise the impact.

South Korean auto manufacturer Hyundai has pulled ahead of the homegrown carmaker despite Tata Motors recording a significant growth of 57 per cent in July 2022, crossing the 50,000 mark for the first time since March 2021 and positioning itself as India's second-largest player in the passenger vehicle segment.

Hyundai sold 50,500 units last month, up 5.1 per cent against 48,042 units in July 2021. Tata Motors, on the other hand, has slipped to third place after reaching its highest monthly sales of 47,505 units. In July 2021, Tata sold 30,185 cars.

Mahindra sold 28,053 units last month, and recorded a 38 per cent growth compared to July 2021. The company sold 21,046 units in the same period last year.

In July 2022, Kia sold 22,022 units and recorded a strong yearly growth of 46.7 per cent. In July 2021, it had dispatched 15,016 cars.

Toyota, a Japanese car maker, had a 50 per cent increase in sales in July, with 19,693 units sold. The July figures were the highest for Toyota since it began operations in India in 1999.

French car maker Renault saw the biggest decline in terms of percentage among Indian passenger vehicle segment players and saw a 27 per cent decline compared to last year. It had sold 7,128 units in July 2022 and 9,787 in the same month last year.

In July of this year, Honda's sales of 6,784 units increased 12 per cent compared to 6,055 units in July 2021, a 12-per cent increase from a previous year of 6,055 units. According to the company, the chip shortage continues to affect supplies and it is looking to align production in order to meet the demand in the shortest time.

In July 2022, Skoda saw a growth of 44 per cent with 4,447 units sold. In the same month last year, the company sold 3,080 units.

MG Motor India, a subsidiary of Chinese automaker SAIC Motor, marketed vehicles under the British marque, registered a decline of 5 per cent and only sold 4,013 units in July 2022, compared to 4,225 units in July 2021.
