South Korea floods, 5 dead

The rain that began Monday is the heaviest since South Korea's weather observatory began 115 years ago, with cars left half submerged, according to the president Yoon Suk-yeol, who apologized for the inconveniences Seoul's posh Gangnam district was particularly hard hit, with at least nine people killed and seven others missing in South Korea.

Images shared on social media earlier this week showed people wading through waist-deep water and overflowing metro stations.

At least five people were killed in Seoul as of early Wednesday, as well as three in the neighbouring Gyeonggi province and one in Gangwon province, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.

At least 17 people have been injured.

More rain was forecast for Wednesday, but less than the heavy downpours on Monday and Tuesday that submerged some streets and trapped people in flooded apartments and stranded cars.

More than 1,100 households were displaced, and at least 2,800 public and private facilities had been damaged in South Korea. Most of the highways and subway lines had been cleared by Wednesday.
