The fee, which will be set at 1.5 per cent of the payment amount, made with a credit card, is applicable to new and existing Telus customers, according to a letter to the federal regulator.

Telus plans to notify existing customers of the new fee in mid-August.

The fee will be calculated for a customer in Alberta, which will have a 1.5 per cent fee of $1.58 for a bill of $100 for services and $5 GST. Instead of paying $105, the customer would pay $106.66.

A 2018 class action lawsuit settled with Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc. resulted in the credit-card giants agreeing to change their no-surcharge rules to allow merchants to charge up to a cap starting October 6, 2022.
