More bodies recovered from site of explosion at Armenia fireworks warehouse

16.08.2022

Emergency workers recovered more bodies from the site of an explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Armenia, raising the death toll from Sunday's accident to 15.

Eighteen people are missing after a blast ripped through the warehouse at the Surmalu market shopping mall in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, TASS news agency cited Armenia's emergency ministry as saying.

The explosion caused parts of the building to collapse and injured at least 62 people.

It is not clear what caused the blast, although authorities have ruled out terrorism.

A video shared by the emergency ministry showed a smouldering pile of rubble and twisted metal.

The footage of the blast shows that there can be no talk of a terrorist act, because first there is fire, smoke rises, and then an explosion, the Armenpress news agency quoted Emergencies Minister Armen Pambukhchyan as saying.

Aermenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has visited the scene along with officials, the ministry said.
