Tokyo reports 27,453 new COVID-19 cases

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced on August 18 that Japan's capital had 27,453 COVID 19 infections after reporting 29,416 cases the day before.

A portion of the daily cases attributed to areas outside Tokyo had been included in the capital's daily infection figures since earlier this year, it was announced on Aug. 17. Excluding these cases, Tokyo's total on August 18 stood at 25,429.

There were 27 COVID 19 deaths in the capital on Aug. 18, and total coronavirus deaths in Tokyo were 4,989.

The capital is battling a seventh wave of coronaviruses, with a daily average of 31,732. In the first week of August, there were 7 cases and 25,629 in the second. In July, Tokyo had a total of 567,960 cases, or a daily average of 18,321. It saw 58,556 total COVID 19 cases in June, for an average of 1,951. Per day, there are 9 infections.
