Abu Dhabi's ADNOC to deliver LNG as German chancellor visits Gulf states

25.09.2022

Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. will deliver liquefied natural gas to Germany as the European nation s chancellor tours the Gulf states looking to firm up energy supplies for the continent's biggest economy.

Olaf Scholz made the second stop on his weekend trip. On Saturday he was in Saudi Arabia and went to Qatar after the United Arab Emirates. He is accompanied by a delegation that includes the chief executive officers of Siemens Energy, SAP, Airbus and ThyssenKrupp AG.

ADNOC is projected to deliver 137,000 cubic meters of LNG to RWE AG's floating terminal in Brunsb ttel near Hamburg as soon as December 17, according to the agreement announced Sunday. More deliveries will be made next year.

In Abu Dhabi, the coalition on liquefied natural gas needs to be advancing to the point where the high demand can be met, according to Scholz.

Germany is about to set up floating LNG import terminals, and some facilities are expected to be ready for winter.

Scholz said that the gas deal is a boost for Scholz, as the government struggles to offset Russian deliveries after the Kremlin shut down a key pipeline. The economy is hurtling toward a recession, and officials have grown increasingly concerned about blackouts and rationing this winter.

ADNOC also agreed with Wilhelm Hoyer GmbH Co. KG to provide as much as 250,000 tons of diesel per month in 2023, according to the UAE s state-owned news agency, WAM. In September of this year, the energy company made its first direct delivery of diesel to Germany.

In northern Europe and Germany s Baltic Sea, Masdar will pursue more opportunities for wind power in order to boost renewable energy output to 10 gigwatts by 2030, according to WAM.

In Qatar, Scholz and the nation s emir are expected to discuss long-term plans for shipments of gas and hydrogen. Qatar's energy minister said on Saturday that talks with RWE and Uniper SE for long-term LNG contracts are ongoing.
