Man accused of firing in Canberra Airport refuses court appearance

26.09.2022

The man accused of firing shots inside the Canberra Airport refused to appear in ACT Magistrates Court on a video link this morning, with the court hearing he became sick of waiting for his appearance.

Ali Rachid Ammoun, 63, was arrested at the airport after he was accused of firing a number of shots inside the building, damaging the windows and leading to an evacuation.

No one was injured in the incident, but flights were disrupted for several hours.

Mr Ammoun was remanded in custody and remains in jail in Canberra.

He is facing three charges, including discharging a firearm inside a building.

Mr Ammoun was supposed to appear via a video link from jail but the court heard he got tired of waiting and returned to his cell.

The case was adjourned until next month.

In Mr Ammoun's absence, his lawyers asked for four weeks to agree on the facts in the case, but Magistrate Louise Taylor said that was too long for Mr Ammoun to wait in jail.

Magistrate Taylor said the case should return to court in two weeks.
