Another rainfall forecast for Queensland

27.09.2022

An already wet September is about to end with another soaking for many regional Queenslanders, as a band of storms sweep across much of the state, bringing hail, wind and rainfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Shane Kennedy said the active system would round out an already unusually wet month, and October was also set to start wet.

Much of the south-west should be spared. It will most likely push a bit further east and a bit further north than we have seen before. Mr Kennedy said that the active trough system moving through the central interior would bring widespread unaffected conditions through to the weekend, but unlike last week, the focus would be further north.

We're expecting to see showers and storms for most of Queensland, but it's probably only the far south-west that will stay clear and parts of the north tropical coast, he said.

There is the possibility of severe thunderstorms. The risk will extend from south of Moranbah down the Emerald, potentially making it to the Lockyer Valley and just inland of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Mr Kennedy said that this storm activity would be easing into the weekend, before he could revigorate early next week.

He said that it will depend on the timing of that trough as it sweeps through, and we should see a bit of clearance in the wake of that on Thursday.

It's looking like a relatively unaffected week next week, with deep tropical moisture over most of the state.

It's likely that you're going to see something early next week if you don't get a shower or storm over the next couple of days. The Macintyre River in Goondiwindi reached a major flood peak of 8.87 metres on Sunday, but had eased back to moderate levels and continued to fall.

In other swollen Queensland rivers, flash flooding was the greatest risk, as most catchments were full, according to Mr Kennedy.

If we see some severe thunderstorms get up, we could see some flash flooding just with catchments so wet.

As we saw around the Gold Coast last week, it really didn't take much to see that water was rising very quickly.
