The Rothmans Medal for Player of the Year

28.09.2022

Named after dual code legend Herbert Henry'Dally' Messenger, who played for the Wallabies in 1907 before crossing the Rubicon and establishing himself as a legend in 13-man game, mainly for Australia and New South Wales.

The Dally M. Medal was awarded by a well-known newspaper company since 1979, but has only been adopted as the official award for the Player of the Year in the NRL since 1998.

Prior to that, the official player of the year, both in the Brisbane Rugby League and New South Wales, received the Rothmans MedalRothmans Medal.

Players are voted on a 3 -- 2 -- 1 basis during every game of the regular season.

The person making the decision is an independent judge, a former player or pundit.

The Rothmans medal was more like the AFL's Brownlow in as far as the referees awarded the points.

At the end of the year, those votes are tallied and a champion is crowned.

The suspension is only one game, and it costs them three points, so players are still eligible if they are suspended.

If a player has multiple suspensions or multi-week bans, they're ineligible.

We already know the scoring up to and including week 12 due to the count being open, but since then it's gone behind closed doors.
