US Congress approves USD 288.6 million in Foreign Military Financing

03.10.2022

The Congress of the United States approved USD 288.6 million in Foreign Military Financing FMF for Poland.

The funding announced by Secretary Blinken in Kyiv on September 8 makes Poland one of the largest recipients of Foreign Military Assistance outside Ukraine, according to the website of the US Embassy in Poland. The purpose of FMF is to build the capacity of the country to defend against the increased threat from Russia.

Poland had delivered extraordinary support to Ukraine in the face of Russia's invasion and that these funds would speed the backfill of capabilities Poland had been able to provide from its own stocks to add to Ukraine's defense, including main battle tanks.

The foreign military financing package is part of the Foreign Military Financing package designed to strengthen the security of Ukraine and 17 of its neighbours, including Poland, which could be at risk of future Russian aggression, according to the embassy.

Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister of Poland, said in a post on Facebook that NATO is strong and united like never before and strengthening the eastern flank. The prime minister said that this is another huge boost to the Polish army - besides the PLN 137 billion EUR 28.2 billion PAP that we will spend next year on defence budget, arms purchases and investments in the Polish defence industry.

Poland's Minister of Defence Mariusz Blaszczak, commenting on the new funding, wrote on Twitter: Good news! The additional resources will be used to strengthen the security of Poland.
