03.10.2022

An Iranian-American imprisoned in Iran for the last seven years has been allowed a one-week furlough out of Tehran's Evin prison, his lawyer said on Saturday.

What Happened: Siamak Namazi was arrested in 2016 under espionage charges that Washington rejected as baseless.

According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the father of former UN official Baquer Namazi, who was also convicted on charges of collaboration with a hostile government, has been allowed to leave Iran for medical treatment.

An unidentified regional nation mediated by Iran and the U.S. for the simultaneous release of prisoners was reported by Iran's Nournews. According to the Iranian news report, billions of dollars of Iran's frozen assets will be released soon because of U.S. sanctions. The White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson denied the report and said that reports from Iranian sources of a transfer of funds related to the release of Baquer Namazi and the furlough of Siamak Namazi were categorically false.
