The election saw 153 candidates vying for 90 seats, including 40 returned by the Election Committee, 30 from Functional Constituencies and 20 from Geographic Constituencies. More than 1.3 million registered voters cast their ballots in over 630 polling stations on the day.

The four-year term began on January 1, 2022, and the first session started on January 12.

When Hong Kong was fighting its worst-ever wave of COVID 19 outbreak, President Xi Jinping expressed great concern for the city and instructed the special administrative region government to make controlling the epidemic the city's top priority at the first opportunity.

The fifth wave of the Pandemic in Hong Kong worsened dramatically in February, with a daily increase of 10,000 new cases. The State leader directed the central government to support Hong Kong's anti-pandemic efforts and directed the Hong Kong SAR government to mobilize all available forces and resources and take all necessary measures to ensure residents safety and society's stability.
