US jobs growth slows for second month

07.10.2022

In the US, jobs growth has slowed for a second month, indicating that the labour market in the world's largest economy may be starting to cool.

In September, the US employers added 263,000 new jobs, which is almost half the average number seen so far this year.

The US central bank said that there will be a slow down in hiring to keep pace with prices that are rising at the fastest pace since the 1980s.

They are trying to avoid a recession, or a downturn in the economy.

Friday's report from the US Labor Department showed that the jobs market is tight, pointing out the unemployment rate that fell from 3.7% in August to 3.5% last month.

They said that the report would reinforce the central bank's commitment to increasing interest rates to tackle rising prices.

The dollar, which has strengthened with higher US interest rates, has gone up after the report, pushing the pound and other currencies lower.

The pound fell to $1.11 following the release of the US jobs figures, having previously been above $1.12 before.
