Elon Musk explains why Twitter Blue relaunch

02.12.2022

Elon Musk has revealed the rationale behind his decision to relaunch Twitter Blue.

What Happened: Musk took to Twitter to explain the reason behind relaunching the controversial Twitter Blue subscription, which would allow users to get a verification badge by paying a monthly premium of $8. The Blue verification plan was briefly rolled out and then withdrawn.

If your Twitter feed is filled with Tweets from people you don't even follow, it's because why it's important: Musk's decision to monetize the blue verification badge received flak from many people, including author Stephen King.

The relaunch resulted in a rise in the number of verified but fake accounts. There were accounts that impersonated leading brands and personalities, creating chaos on the platform. To curb the growth of fake accounts, Twitter introduced a badge and a feature to allow organizations to manage and authenticate affiliated accounts.

Users can add a verified phone number to their profile to distinguish authentic users from bots, according to the microblogging site.

Musk, who took over Twitter in October, stated that the platform has purging spam and fraudulent accounts, which may drop users' follower count.
