34% of Japanese government workers take paternity leave

06.12.2022

In the fiscal year ended March 2022, a record 34% of eligible male central government workers in Japan took paternity leave, the minister in charge of civil service reform said Tuesday.

The figure, up 5 percentage points from the previous fiscal year, surpassed the government's goal of raising the ratio of men taking leave to 30% by the year 2025, said Taro Kono at a news conference.

Kono pointed out that the ratio between ministries differed greatly, and he would instruct the Cabinet Bureau of Personnel Affairs to urge ministries that fell short to raise the ratio.
