06.12.2022

In 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina produced 1.2 million tons of municipal waste, which is 1.8 percent more than in 2020. Each inhabitant of Bosnia and Herzegovina produced an average of 356 kg of municipal waste last year.

In 2021, 940,405 tons of municipal waste were collected by public collection, which is 1.9 percent more than in 2020.

According to the BiH Agency for Statistics, the largest increase in household waste was recorded in the collection of waste, as much as 80.9 percent of the total collected waste.

As part of the municipal waste treatment, 973,000 tons of waste arrived at controlled landfills, of which 99.3 percent were permanently disposed of as a disposal option. In 2021, the municipal waste disposal rate is less than 11.1 percent, which is a noticeable drop compared to 2020.

The current trend indicates that more needs to be done to prevent waste generation, as well as increase the recycling rate in the coming years.

The BiH Agency for Statistics BHAS submits annual reports to Eurostat on an annual basis, based on the methodology used for reporting on municipal waste.

Eurostat data on the generation and treatment of municipal waste, which is expressed in kilograms per inhabitant, is based on BHAS data on the total population, as a mid-year estimate, according to Fena news agency.
