After prison ordeal, expert warns of the challenges

09.12.2022

After her prison ordeal over, Brittney Griner will have to deal with the challenge of transitioning back into life at home - where a strong support network will be critical, a mental health expert said Friday.

Neil Greenberg, a clinical psychiatrist and professor of mental health at King's College London, said most people's trajectory isn't the one you see in films, where you're this damaged person years later. Ms. Griner, who had been in jail for 10 months in Russia, landed in San Antonio early Friday and is expected to be examined and receive any necessary medical treatment.

Prof. Greenberg has advised the British government on the repatriation of kidnapped people in about two dozen cases involving detained people and hostages. He stressed that every case and detention experience is different.
